Anoushka Shankar
As the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar and half-sister of Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Norah Jones, Anoushka Shankar is ever mindful of her familial roots. But the London-born prodigy has come into her own distinct sense of innovation and vision. Shankar began studying under her father at age nine and went on to appear with him as he toured the world. She performed at Carnegie Hall while still in her teens, and also with Peter Gabriel's World of Music, Arts, and Dance festival. Shankar made her recording debut at 13, appearing on the album In Celebration, a tribute to the works of her father. She made her solo debut at 17 years old with 1998's Anoushka, and in that same year, became the youngest and only female recipient of the House of Commons Shield awarded by British Parliament "in recognition of her artistry and musicianship -- as a pre-eminent musician of the Asian Arts." Her sophomore release, Anourag, followed two years later, and 2001's Live at Carnegie Hall brought her international status, garnering her first Grammy nomination and making her the youngest person ever nominated in the World Music category. After releasing a book, earning a best supporting actress nomination from India's National Film Awards for her debut role in Dance Like a Man, and being named one of 20 Asian Heroes by the Asia edition of Time Magazine, Shankar returned to the recording studio and released her critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated fourth album, Rise, which she composed, produced and arranged. Dubai's Gulf News Panorama noted, "She has accomplished far more than many musicians would do in a lifetime." |
