August 9, 2009 Toto La Momposina Nation Beat
Sunday, August 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In Colombian culture, a cantadora is a revered teacher and healer. Totó La Momposina earned this title by actively working to preserve the traditions of cumbia, reflecting the influences of African, Spanish, and Caribbean song and dance. The spontaneity of her performances entrances audiences worldwide. The Brazilian rhythms of maracatu meet the soul of Southern country rock in the tunes of Nation Beat. The group’s eclectic grooves were recently featured at the 2008 Farm Aid Festival, where Nation Beat partnered with Willie Nelson.
