Although their first EP, The Prelude, was released in 2007, the trio that make up The Mighty Underdogs are not newcomers to the world of hip-hop. Vocalists and rappers Gift of Gab and Lateef the Truth Speaker hit the scene out of the University of California Davis in the early ‘90’s with fellow artist Lyrics Born, as founding members of Blackalicious and Latryx, respectively. Artist Headnodic has been laying down beats for artists since his days as bassist and producer for Bay Area Group Crown City Rockers, formerly Mission. 

With each artist achieving success in their own right, including Grammy nominations and spots on numerous top ten lists, the collaboration was a long time in the making. The result is the ground breaking 2008 full length album, Dropping Science Fiction. The goal of the project was to bust preconceived notions of hip-hop wide open, showcasing the less serious side of the style with the rappified twang of “Gunfight,” featuring MC MF Doom and borrowing cues from smooth jazz in “Want You Back,” featuring Joyo Velarde. The Mighty Underdogs brought the best of their collective experiences to the Grove July 26, opening for Lyrics Born.  They showcased the versatility of the Bay Area hip-hop community, from Gift of Gab's lightening quick lyrics to Lateef's slightly silly, always soulful sound.
